Speaking at Central PA Open Source Conference

If you’re unable to get to Pittsburgh for Abstractions II this week, you can catch Liam’s talk in Lancaster, PA in mid-September at the Central PA Open Source Conference (CPOSC). Liam’s talk for both conferences is entitled Programming Language: Learning to Present, Talk, and Ask Questions in an Inclusive Way.

Central PA Open Source Conference
Having presented at many WordCamps and WordPress Meetups since 2012, Liam Dempsey has been speaking at tech conferences for years. In recent years, he’s been exploring new communities, working to connect with people outside of the WordPress world. As such, Liam has been presenting at conferences and to groups that are not so focused on WordPress, our preferred content management system.

A Focus on Language to Build Community

In applying to share a talk at CPOSC, Liam submitted an overview of his talk:

As our tech communities grow more aware of the need to and value of being inclusive and welcoming in our approach, many people still struggle with how to amend their vocabulary and style of speaking to reflect their desire to really be inclusive. The causes for this are many but often include cognitive biases, and a lack of understanding about how to speak in a way that will entice others to hear and listen to what we’re saying, and a misunderstanding on how importance words and phrases are to humans. This talk will explore the value of saying things in such a way so as to build inclusivity and connection between people. The talk will provide tools and language attendees can immediately implement to foster greater sense of welcome and community.

In preparing this talk, Liam will draw from his experience as a community organizer. Since 2019, Liam has served as the organizer of the Philly ‘burbs WordPress Meetup. He organized WordCamps in Philadelphia from 2012 to 2018.
